Name: Tom
Course Studied: Level 2 Diploma in Bench Joinery

Tom started at Oaklands College in September 2018, enrolling onto a City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Bench Joinery.

Having thoroughly enjoyed his one year course at Oaklands College, Tom got in touch with the college to provide an update on what he has achieved since gaining his qualifications at Oaklands College.

“I gained plenty of experience whilst at Oaklands College, which allowed me to develop the skills and expertise to create bespoke gates and doors for friends and family.

In my spare time in between lessons I enjoyed creating joinery products and furnishings, whilst also taking on paid work opportunities fitting anything from letter boxes to cat flaps, locks and skirting boards.”

Tom has also been working closely with his uncles company, where he uses the skills he developed at Oaklands College on site carpentry jobs.

“I would like to thank all of the Carpentry and Joinery staff at Oaklands College for all of the advice, guidance and experience that you passed on to me throughout my time on the course.

I would especially like to thank Peter Bowler for kindly gifting me a wood turning lathe to get me started on my journey.

I’ve found a real passion for turning and have since upgraded to a quality variable speed Draper and have a dozen proper turning chisels. I now have bowls, bottle openers and key rings for sale in the Tring Brewery shop, with plenty more ideas and a good source of hardwood.”
