Horticulture students from Oaklands College will be pitching their garden design skills against green fingered enthusiasts of the UK as they head to compete in BBC Gardeners World Live next week.

The team of Level 2 and Level 3 students are once again entering the ‘Beautiful Borders’ competition,  a part of the show which celebrates creative design in small spaces. Over the past few months they have seen their design evolve from sketching an initial concept right through to sowing, and nurturing the plants incorporated into the final design.

2017 was the first time the team headed to the show, scooping a Gold Award and a special recognition form the judges for ‘Best Interpretation of Brief’ for their design which celebrated the shows 50thanniversary.

Their design for this year’s theme of ‘Every Space Counts’  will face a team of expert judges which last year included BBC Gardeners World favourite Monty Don.

After the press preview and judging day on Wednesday the show opens to the public, welcoming thousands of gardening enthusiasts to chat to the team and enjoy their design.

Horticulture Tutor Tee Robertson said: “We’re thrilled to be back at BBC Gardeners World, it is a fantastic opportunity for our students to manage every step and detail of a garden design project from initial concept to growing, sowing and presenting to judges.

“We’re focused on getting the garden ready for judging, but also can’t wait to meet and chat to the thousands of the show’s visitors who attend over the weekend.”
