Filmmaking Alumni return to get creative at WGC Campus

Former Oaklands Film students have returned to our film studios at WGC campus as they embark on making the next episode of their popular web series.

Alumni duo Element 186 are former students Bradley Page and Myles Brown who studied Media with us at Oaklands College to HND level. Having just completed their studies at the University of Hertfordshire for the year, they have decided to return to their college roots to work on the next instalment of a film project which has seen them in the last few months nominated for a prestigious International Achievement Recognition Awards (IARA) this September.

The team are up for ‘Best Web Series 2017’ in the prestigious awards which celebrate, highlight and award honours to deserving, outstanding individuals, businesses and organisations for excellence, diversity, equality and innovation.

Element 186 (2016) is an award winning short Sci-fi epic that is being turned into a web series and was shot in the dystopian landscape in Glencoe, Scotland.  It follows the pilot of an aircraft which loses control before an artificial intelligence companion, Christopher transports her onto the surface of the planet before the crash. The story follows pilot Young and her built in AI as they embark on a journey to find the wreckage.

Element 186 created the first episode of the series during their Foundation Degree course, under tutor Mark Garvey. Now they see themselves in the company of BBC 3 and Emmy nominated web series in their category for the awards, which has a ceremony in London on September 2nd.

They are using time away from studies to get ahead working on the follow-on to this initial success, and have set up camp for a few days filming using the hi-tech studio at Welwyn Garden City Campus, home to Media and other creative subjects such as Music and Performing Arts.

The team have been really thankful to Media Technician John, Peter and Chris who have been on hand to share their industry expertise in shooting and getting the absolute best from the equipment.

Bradley Page said: “It’s great to be back on campus filming at Oaklands and we’re thankful to be able to use the facilities and pull on the expertise of the technicians to really get the best from our next series. We filmed here as part of our studies – it is amazing to think how much has happened since then with the awards on the horizon.

“To be up for an IARA is incredible – of course we’d love to win but to be nominated amongst such company is a great achievement. Whatever happens in September, we know it’s going to be a great night!”
